Retroverted Uterus and Its Connection with Pregnancy and Constipation

Updated: Jan 26, 2020

What does retroverted uterus mean?

When your uterus is tipped backward toward the back of the pelvis aiming towards the rectum, your uterus is described as a retroverted uterus or a tipped or tilted uterus. The majority of the women have an anteverted uterus, a uterus that aims forward towards the belly.

What’s the connection between retroverted uterus and pregnancy?

In some cases, pregnant women who have anteverted uterus can have retroverted uterus after giving birth when the ligaments that hold the uterus in place become weakened. The uterus reverts back to its original position after the woman gives birth but in some cases, it doesn’t.

On the other hand, pregnant women who have retroverted uterus will have anteverted uterus between the 10th -12th week of pregnancy. However in some cases, “the growing uterus is ‘snagged’ on pelvic bone (usually the sacrum). This condition is known as ‘incarcerated uterus’. The symptoms usually occur somewhere between weeks 12 and 14, and can include pain and difficulties passing urine.” https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au

Does having a retroverted uterus affect conception?

Having a retroverted uterus may affect conception in some ways “because sperm may get a little harder in the uterus, but this may be influenced by choosing certain sexual positions during or after intercourse (e. g. the woman lying on her stomach).” https://www.pregworld.org

However, some women who have a retroverted uterus may experience painful sex. “Some women find that rear-entry positions and deep thrusting are uncomfortable because the penis is closer to the uterus and bumps into it. Couples in this situation are encouraged to experiment and try other positions that are more pleasurable. Intercourse may be more comfortable when the woman has more control over the depth of penetration.” https://www.issm.info

What’s the connection between retroverted uterus and constipation?

Since the retroverted uterus aims towards the rectum, it may cause constipation or pain when defecating.

What should I do now that I found out I have a retroverted uterus?

According to the feminist midwife, “in the case of IUD insertions and surgical uterine procedures, it is vital to know uterine position to know the best placement for the tenaculum, to pull the uterus in position. In the case of retroversion, placing the tenaculum on the posterior lip of the cervix can pull a retroverted uterus to a vertical position.”

If you’re experiencing serious symptoms, your doctor will do some tests to check the cause of the pain to help her decide what methods to use. The natural approach is to try Ayurvedic hip massage or Arvigo (Maya Abdominal Therapy).
