"I believe you are someone truly special." This is the reply of Dr. Dyson Ido, a compassionate cyborg doctor to Alita, a powerful cyborg when she asked him why the deadly and corrupt forces will come after her. Alita is special because of her mysterious past, extraordinary fighting abilities, and most especially her kind and powerful heart.
Alita: Battle Angel directed by Robert Rodriguez and written by James Cameron was released in theaters nationwide last February 14, 2019. This sci-fi action movie is based on the popular graphic novel series “Gunnm” by Yukito Kishiro. The main characters in credits order are Dr. Ido (Christoph Waltz), Alita (Rosa Salazar), Chiren (Jennifer Connelly), Vector (Mahershala Ali), Zapan (Ed Skrein), Grewishka (Jackie Earle Haley), and Hugo (Keean Johnson).
The movie begins with Ido looking for spare parts from the scrapyard. He found broken parts of a cyborg which he revived. When the cyborg awakes, she doesn’t remember who she is. Even though Ido wants to protect Alita from her mysterious history, she discovers she has unique fighting abilities she can use to save her loved ones. As she regains her memory, she sets out on a journey that will determine her destiny.
Aside from the main character being special, the movie is special as well. With a domestic total gross of $85,710,210, Alita: Battle Angel surpassed Ghost in the Shell, a sci-fi action film based on a Japanese manga which also starred a female cyborg. It is #3 most discussed movie of 2019 and #6 most shared movie of 2019 (metacritic.com). It is also faithful to the manga that inspired it with only little changes. It has mesmerizing production and digital effects with impressive actor performances and chemistry. So whether you are a manga fan or not, you definitely need to watch this. I’m crossing my fingers for a sequel.
